Back Pain Treatments & Spinal Surgery at Oaks
Hospital
If you suffer from back pain or neck pain you are not alone,
most adults will have been affected at some point in their adult
life. Oaks Hospital offers effective treatments for chronic back
pain, whether that is advice on how to effectively manage and
control your pain, physiotherapy or even spinal surgery. You will
receive care and support from the diagnosis of your condition
through to treatment and rehabilitation.
What causes back pain?
As we age the most common cause of spinal pain, besides muscular
is degenerative change - ‘wear and tear’ of the discs in between
the vertebrae and associated joints of the spinal column.
Degenerative changes are often caused by movement, this is why it
is commonly found in the neck (cervical) and lower (lumbar)
spine.
How is spinal pain treated?
The treatments available at the Oaks Hospital include both
surgical and non-surgical options, many as day case procedures on
an outpatient basis.
Pain Management
Our Consultants in Pain Medicine
Dr Alexander-Williams, Dr
Masters and Dr
Waheed are able to help patients with a range of conditions
including chronic pain, lower back pain,
neck pain, sciatica, muscular syndromes, neuropathic pain, post
surgical pain and complex regional pain syndromes. Non-surgical
techniques include medication, counter-stimulation such as TENS and
pain relieving joint injections.
Physiotherapy
Oaks Hospital’s Physiotherapy team
can make an assessment of your condition and offer a programme of
specific exercises to help maintain strong spinal muscles which
will take the strain off the associated joints, ligaments and
discs, or other treatment such as acupuncture or manipulation. Our
Physiotherapists can also make a direct referral for an MRI scan or book an appointment to see a pain
consultant or spinal surgeon should they feel it is necessary.
Spinal Surgery
Oaks Hospital’s Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeons Mr
Blackman and
Mr Suresh specialise in the management and treatment of adult
spinal conditions. This includes back and neck pain, disorders of
the lumbar spine (including sciatica), minimally invasive surgery,
degenerative conditions, deformity, disc replacement (motion
sparing technology), spinal decompression, traumatic injury, tumour
and osteoporotic fractures, epidurals, nerve root blocks and facet
joint injections.
Surgery can sound frightening but timely surgery can reduce
debilitating symptoms and considerably improve quality of life.
Your care will be tailored to your individual needs. Our
Consultants and nursing staff are highly experienced and have your
care and comfort as their highest priority. During and after
treatment, you will receive a standard of care, which is second to
none, and the reassurance that a Resident Doctor is available 24
hours a day.
