Volunteering opportunity with the Alzheimer Society

Volunteering opportunity with the Alzheimer Society

The Alzheimer’s Society are offering a fun and friendly opportunity for individuals who have spare time on their hands to volunteer for their side by side service where you can make a real difference to someone’s life who lives with dementia.

How it works?

You’ll receive training and support to help you fulfil and develop within your role.

Reimbursements are paid for petrol/public transport, activities and food and you’ll also enjoy meeting other Side by Side volunteers where you can share experiences and chat over a nice refreshing cup of tea.

Once training has been completed, and you feel ready to embrace your new role, you’ll be paired up with someone with dementia to help them keep on doing the things they love or even try new things – from going to the Zoo or catching the latest movie.

Who can volunteer?

Anyone can volunteer from 16 upward. Whether you’re a staff member at the Oaks Hospital, patient attending the Hospital or a friend of someone at the Hospital - all are welcome.

No Prior knowledge of dementia is necessary as training is provided.

How often?

Volunteers can help once a week, fortnightly or even monthly for 2-3 hours week days or weekends.

Services available to volunteers?

Face to Face Side by Side; Telephone Side by Side or Side by Side recruitment volunteers.

The benefits?

Side by Side really is a two-way street. Of course, there’s the feel-good factor of knowing that you’re changing someone’s life. However, volunteers are also constantly amazed by how much they learn from the people they support. As with any relationship, it’s a shared journey made up of unique moments, some you’ll treasure forever not to mention the training courses you can attend for free.

‘Side by Side has increased my confidence, improved my social skills and made me grow as a person. I just love it in every way!’ Side by Side volunteer.
