Matthew Tutton has more than 15 years experience as a Consultant General and Colorectal Surgeon. He is a specialist in robotic bowel surgery, laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery and endoscopy. He is the Divisional Director for Surgery at Colchester and Ipswich Hospitals.

Laparoscopic and open surgery for all types of hernia repairs and gallstones, haemorrhoid treatments including THD, and minimally invasive techniques for fistula (VAAFT) and pilonidal surgery (EPSIT). He is an expert in gastroscopy and colonoscopy and offers transanal endoscopic microsurgery service (TEM) for the treatment of large rectal polyps and early cancers.

He is also a member of the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland, the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland, the Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons, the European Association of Endoscopic Surgeons and the European Society of Coloproctology.

Academic Background

Mr Tutton's medical training was at Guy's and St Thomas' Hospitals, where he also undertook a Bachelor of Science Degree in neurosciences. Research for his thesis in colorectal cancer and Master of Surgery Degree was based at the Institute of Cancer Research and the Royal Marsden Hospitals. He has presented many national and international papers related to this research. He has also published papers, book chapters and presented internationally on topics including laparoscopic hernia repair, training in laparoscopic gallstone surgery, and laparoscopic bowel surgery. He has given many invited lectures, including lectures to the European Association of Endoscopic Surgeons in Athens and Stockholm as well as performing live surgery demonstrations to international meetings. As a consultant surgeon he has undertaken travelling fellowships to both the USA and to Japan to develop minimally invasive surgical techniques.
