Mr Mahbub Alam was appointed as a Consultant in Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery at Colchester Hospital University Foundation Trust in July 2017, having previously been a Consultant in London since 2014. He read Medicine at University College London, receiving a Prestigious Scholarship. He then went on to complete a MS degree in Biomechanics and Bioengineering at the Mechanical & Bioengineering Engineering departments at Imperial College London, receiving awards including from Arthritis Research Campaign, Hammersmith Hospitals Trustees Award and the Royal College of Surgeons. The MS degree involved developing a measuring device to help diagnose knee instability following injury, for example to the ACL and associated structures. He concurrently developed a novel operation for patella instability (MPFL Reconstruction) with an international team of surgeons. In addition he researched complex multi-ligament knee injuries and how to improve knee replacement kinematics, helping the development of knee replacement engineering. Mr Mahbub Alam completed the NE Thames Orthopaedic rotation in 2013, having worked at the hospitals throughout NE London and Essex, including The Royal London Hospital and The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital (Stanmore), specialising in Knee Surgery, Sports Injuries and Arthroplasty. He completed the Knee, Sports Injuries and Lower Limb Trauma fellowship at UHS Southampton, a centre for the European Knee Fellowship. He has also completed several International Fellowships for knee surgery. Mr Alam has published research in International Journals in topics including Total Knee Replacements, Knee Sports and Ligament Injuries and Patella Instability.He is a reviewer for the Bone & Joint Journal and the American Journal of Sports Medicine. He has been the local lead for multi-centre studies on knee replacement outcomes. He teaches on several courses for senior doctors and surgeons including FRCS (Tr & Orth) and ATLS. Mr Mahbub Alam is involved in education outside of Medicine, teaching and mentoring students for GCSE's and career guidance in Tower Hamlets. In his spare time, Mr Alam is a keen chess player and continues to play hockey, but has steadily seen his role at the hockey club decline from the 1st team down to the 3rd.
