Academic Background
Mr Loeffler trained at the London Hospital and graduated in 1984. Inspired by the teaching of Michael Freeman and the rest of the Orthopaedic department at the London, he decided to pursue a career in orthopaedic surgery. Basic surgical training was at Addenbrookes and Whipps Cross Hospital. Mr Loeffler was anatomy demonstrator at Cambridge University and anatomy tutor at Queens, Magdalen and Girton colleges. He was appointed as registrar and then senior registrar at the Royal London Hospital. This coincided with the building of the helipad on top of A and E and badly injured patients flown in from the Greater London area and he gained much experience in the management of major orthopaedic trauma. He had spells at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital and first encountered the region in 1991 at Black Notley and Colchester hospitals where he enjoyed working for Richard Todd and Tudor Thomas. Mr Loeffler's interest in knee surgery was encouraged by Michael Freeman, David Dandy, John King, Steven Cannon and Richard Todd. He went on fellowship to Auckland to work with Barry Tietjens, knee surgeon to the All Blacks and all leading NZ sportsmen. He is a Clinical tutor in orthopaedics and teaches undergraduate students on attachments. He has published research in orthopaedic surgery on several topics.
