Mr Zafar Maan - Urology

Mr Zafar Maan is a Consultant Urologist specialising in endourology, laser prostate, stone surgery, andrology, paediatric urology, urological cancers and general female urology.

Clinical interests

As a stone surgery specialist Mr Maan is particularly interested in minimally invasive procedures using telescopes, which utilise the natural passageways of the urinary tract or access organs using a ‘keyhole’ approach. This has the advantages of less complications and a more speedy recovery for patients. He uses fine instruments and Holmium laser technology to remove stones and improve the drainage of the kidney or bladder to help prevent further stones forming.

For patients with enlarged prostates causing urinary symptoms Mr Maan offers Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (‘HoLEP’ for short) or Trans Urethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP). He also carries out the UroLift procedure. He is also trained in the management of erectile dysfunction and female urology.

Academic background

After completing a two-year period of research as part of a Masters in Urological Surgery at University College London in 2003, Mr Maan entered the urology higher surgical training programme in Cambridge and Essex. This provided excellent training in prostate laser surgery, andrology and general urology.

He gained admission as a Fellow to the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2008, after which he undertook the sub-speciality training fellowship in stone surgery and endourology at St Bartholemew’s Hospital, London. he was appointed as a Consultant Urological Surgeon at Colchester Hospital University Foundation NHS Trust in November 2010 and holds a Senior Clinical Lecturer post at Anglia Ruskin University.
