Breast Enlargement (Augmentation)
What is a breast enlargement (augmentation)?
A breast enlargement (commonly called a "boob job") is performed by inserting a breast implant behind your natural breast tissue. This pushes and projects the natural tissue forward, giving a fuller and larger breast appearance. Breast enlargement surgery can provide both physical and psychological benefits. Patients who have undergone the procedure report that they feel more feminine and personally feel confident about their new body image and can experience improved self esteem as a result of having surgery.
Breast augmentation is performed under general anaesthetic and takes around one hour. An overnight stay in hospital is typical.
What are the results like and how will I feel?
This procedure can provide excellent results in women wishing to improve and increase their breast shape and size. The operation should only be undertaken by a Consultant Plastic Surgeon (often referred to as a Cosmetic Surgeon or Cosmetic Consultant) who is fully qualified and well experienced in this type of specialist breast surgery. Most women experience some discomfort following breast surgery and take pain killers for up to one week after. It is important to allow for a natural period of healing to take place and usual to take 7-14 days away from work (depending on the type of work) to rest and recover. Strenuous activity or heavy lifting should be avoided for approximately six weeks.

How do I arrange a consultation to discuss a breast enlargement at the Oaks Hospital?
It is important for you to have realistic expectations of the improvements that can be achieved through breast augmentation surgery. Your Consultant Plastic Surgeon will take into account your age, skin texture and the existing shape and position of your breast tissue and nipples when predicting the outcome of your results. It is therefore essential to have a thorough consultation with a specialist surgeon before you make a decision to go ahead with a cosmetic surgery procedure.
